travelling allowance to- Position of the question- peculiar. Recommended.

It remains to be considered whether travelling expenses ought not to be thrown on the Surveyor. Public interest are likely to suffer and I entirely agree with you in this.

For R.G. MacDonnell

Put to the Treasury this 40th of next month: but I wish to hear what Sir F. Rogers will say on the date from which it should commence.

It is hardly likely that an answer will be received by Monday's mail & therefore this is sent in anticipation.

I certainly think that the allowance should cover both travelling and outlay generally.

I will reply by the next mail, which will be sent back then on the 3rd of May.

I was told by R.M. Ball (quoting from pencilled note on Mr. Wilson's letter) that substantially the decision of 22nd Dec'r 1865 was not communicated to MacDonnell till 23rd Nov. 1866.

N. 07. Surveyor General's Office Victoria 27. April 1866.

Dir,

On the 19th Current;

I for the first time received notice that an Officer of the Royal Engineers had been appointed to superintend the erection and repairs of Consular Buildings in China and Japan, and that my services in connection with the Foreign Office were consequently no longer required.

The Honorable

The Colonial Secretary
